Self-portrait

Background

Ray Arzaga is a Montreal-based photographer and digital technician who uses his strong understanding of light to produce dramatic visuals.

A graduate of Commercial Photography, he has also studied Media Arts and has found himself in projects involving voice work and cinema. His passion for the art of movement through martial arts and acrobatics reflects in his creative work, and has earned him a reputation in the world of dance and circus.

In his early career, he debuted shooting weddings and events which eventually led to his work in esports and the fighting game community. This allowed him to partner up with Red Bull Canada and Japan on several occasions, eventually leading him to spending time in Japan.

Past employments include Apple, Nintendo, and Image Salon.

Statement of the Artist:

“Art is subjective” – we create according to our position within a spectrum. Some days may be more technical, adhering to society’s suggested boundaries, and some days will be about the inner child’s desire to play. The innocent curiosity has no limits, and suddenly your medium changes, and you’re adding elements that don’t make sense… but you do it anyway. The work is rough around the edges, but there is truth in it.

I respect and admire the idea of imperfection. I am of the mind that art should suggest, rather than announce, and I try to honour the mystery of art in my personal work – some elements appear fantastical, but remain grounded in reality. Or perhaps it’s just “commercial” perfection. Or both? Regardless… for me, the raw, visceral components of the imagery will – when married – be supported by meticulous lighting that form a piece that balances between both worlds.
